| Welcome to the eighth newsletter from Coaching for Hope |
September 2009 |

Coaching for Hope is part of the international volunteering and development organisation Skillshare International, and is supported by The English FA. We support local efforts to use football to empower young people in developing countries and engage them with key issues affecting their lives. The Coaching for Hope programme started in West Africa in 2005. We now work in both West Africa and South Africa where we have trained over 700 coaches and run HIV awareness and football sessions for over 30,000 young people.

Inclusion course brings people together in Mali

The final of the Inclusion League Cup – July 2009
From 12th to the 18th July, 90 Malian coaches shared football and social education learning, working together to overcome problems such as HIV and AIDS, and discrimination of disabled people and women. 45 new coaches from our partner organisations joined 25 returning coaches moving up to level 2 and 3 of the curriculum, and 20 coaches focusing on the inclusion of young disabled footballers.
UK coaches from Brighton & Hove Albion FC and the Tottenham Hotspur Foundation supported the senior Malian coaches in their delivery. Graduation day now awaits those coaches still to do their observed sessions with their groups of young people.
Alongside the course, CFH senior coaches ran a daily 30 minute football tournament to inspire people and create a healthy competitive atmosphere. The final was played out between ‘Nieta’ (the Bamanan word for ‘progress’) and the inclusion group. This surprised some onlookers, as the inclusion group had many disabled footballers who competed against able-bodied and experienced footballers. However, as Nikki Richardson of Brighton & Hove Albion FC said:
“This puts paid to any notion that people living with disabilities are somehow inferior. Teams underestimated them in this tournament, and paid the price. The inclusion group are in the final because simply put: they were the best team. It’s about working with what you can do here, and not what you can’t. Have you seen the guys that can’t walk here? They are truly amazing at football!”

Stuart Christie of BHAFC delivering some training to the participants on the course
SA course June 09
This summer coaches from Brighton and Hove Albion (BHAFC) and Hull City (HCAFC) delivered a successful course in South Africa. Both Stuart Christie of BHAFC and Matt Barr of HCAFC were thrilled with the level of quality the local coaches were at, and as a result they both delivered high level training. BHAFC have been heavily involved in the delivery of the course from the very beginning and have also been instrumental in the curriculum development. Please see the website for more photos and reports.

Two new Coaching for Hope development worker placements!
We have recently recruited two new development workers to support the use of CFH strategies with partners in Lesotho and South Africa.
Lucy Mills has been appointed to work with SCORE as the Football and Life Skills Programme Facilitator. Lucy will work with SCORE to support the implementation and coordination of sports projects, incorporating CFH strategies into the SCORE approach. She will establish systems to support and mentor community based sports leaders who have been trained to deliver football coaching and life skills training. Lucy has been living in Cape Town for several years and has valuable experience of football and development in the region, especially with regards to football and gender. We at Coaching for Hope are looking forward to her contributions!
Julie-Anne Savarit Cosenza has also recently been appointed to work with the Olympafrica Youth Ambassador Programme (OYAP) under the Lesotho National Olympic Committee. Julie-Anne will be supporting OYAP to implement our first life skills and HIV education interventions in Lesotho and helping them deliver the Coaching for Hope component of the Big Lottery Fund project that supports people living with HIV and AIDS. |
Inclusion League gets people going in Bamako
With generous support from adidas, CFH had the opportunity to initiate a league style championship with three local partners in Mali. Each partner facilitated a championship league that addressed the needs of people who don't normally have access to football competition, specifically young people and disabled people. The championship not only gave opportunities for quality competition, it also opened discussion about the role of women, young men and disabled people in public football. We were also able to identify ways to improve local grassroots football, and harness support for further initiatives. “This was a great opportunity to play and feel important playing” said one player in the FEMASH league, “ I hope we can do this again soon!” The Malian Minister of Youth and Sport praised our work, saying “Coaching for Hope is setting an example; we should all strive to do what they are doing!” |

Jacob Naish, Programme Advisor returns from Mali
Brighton and Hove Albion’s Jacob Naish has just returned from six months in Bamako, Mali as our first official development worker. While in Bamako, Jacob supported our local staff and partners on Football and Social Education delivery, the implementation of a three partner Inclusion League, and the development and delivery of the brand new Young Leaders course with support from the Football For Hope foundation. The young leaders course was a great success, with 15 young people from all over Bamako building friendships and common goals through an eight week football and communication, and leadership course. We hope that Jacob will be available to help build the next steps of this course and continue!
Roma stays with CFH
Just as Chelsea celebrated John Terry committing his career to the club and Liverpool were relieved when Steven Gerrard said he would spend the rest of his playing career at Anfield, CFH is delighted to announce that Roma Traore, our Assistant in Burkina Faso, has similarly pledged his future to us. After being offered a contract elsewhere he has decided to stay with CFH and develop his career with us.

Matt Bar of Hull City AFC
Hull City donation to the work of Coaching for Hope
Earlier this year Hull City AFC donated £2500 to CFH. Over the past five years, Paul Duffen (Hull City AFC Chairman) and the football club have supported CFH through cash donations and by sending their community coaches to deliver our highly credible Goals Without Goalposts curricula. We would like to thank Hull City AFC for their continued support and look forward to continuing our work with them in the future. |

The first annual CFH staff meeting!
In July 2009 we held our first annual meeting in Burkina Faso. Staff representing each of the offices where we work attended, including Cape Town Southern Africa, Bamako Mali, Ouagadougou Burkina Faso and York England. This event was ground breaking in our development as a programme which promoted good working practise and showed commitment to the work we are rolling out all the time in towns and villages all over West and Southern Africa. |
Peace Corps partnership in Ouaga
In July 2009, we worked with Peace Corps to train 30 Burkinabé football coaches and youth workers at the International School of Ouagadougou in Burkina Faso. The participants included five female coaches, three coaches working for disability NGOs, 18 coaches from rural areas, and five people who coach women’s football teams. Over the eight-day course, participants were trained to plan and deliver a football training session, with the emphasis on safety and fun rather than on winning. They also practised different methods and styles of communication and learning, which are very important in youth coaching. They were also trained to deliver Coaching for Hope’s eight in-depth workshops on sexual health, which all coaches pledged to deliver at least twice to the football teams they work with. The workshops combine discussion and role plays on sexual health issues with practical games on the football field. This fun environment allows the children to absorb important messages about safe sex more easily.
The training was delivered by four senior Coaching for Hope coaches: David Agaloué, Hunlede-Anani Kissimbo (Benjamin), Roma Traoré and Martin Zinona. Zack Morrison, one of the Peace Corps volunteers involved in the project, said: “The training went very well and we have understood everything; we are happy. We spent a great week and we learned many interesting things.”
Wandaogo Omarou (Wendy) Peace Corps Coach at Guimboari (Piéla) told us: "I will first say thank you. Thank you Coaching for Hope and Peace Corps for the opportunity that they've given me to be here and take part to this training. It is the greatest experience in training in my career. Words fail me to explain. Once I get to my place I will do my planning series to start the activities.”
This innovative training gave participants the opportunity to learn about "Sport and Development" – which included an overview of the movement and how sport can contribute to peace building and development. The coaches planned their own practical football sessions and delivered these in small groups to show what they had learned during the training week.
