August 2010 |

Coaching for Hope is part of the international volunteering and development organisation Skillshare International, and is supported by The FA. We support local efforts to use football to empower young people in developing countries and engage them with key issues affecting their lives. The Coaching for Hope programme started in West Africa in 2005. We now work in both West Africa and South Africa where we have trained over 700 coaches and run HIV awareness and football sessions for more than 30,000 young people.

Martin Allen leads masterclass in Cape Town
From 17th to 20th June 2010, Martin Allen led a course for 25 local coaches in Cape Town. The course, which was sponsored by the League Managers Association (LMA), provided high quality advanced training to the volunteer coaches who have already successfully completed level one or two coaching qualifications with us.
|
The main objective of the course was for the coaches to learn how to run effective sessions for young people that are already in structured teams by using a variety of communication skills.
Martin Allen, former manager of clubs including Brentford and Reading, said: "Football has the ability to unite communities and can help to create real hope for some of these youngsters. Coaching for Hope uses football to educate local people, helping to change both their lives and the lives of others and I’m truly honoured to be involved in such a fantastic cause and to be given the opportunity to contribute my part to a World Cup legacy here in South Africa." |
Richard Bevan, Chief Executive of the LMA, added: "The LMA are delighted to be able to support such a worthwhile course. Martin Allen is a highly experienced manager who has a great deal to offer the world of football."
Mike Richardson (Coaching for Hope's UK and West Africa Programme Manager), concludes: “Martin Allen did a superb job for Coaching for Hope... the way he communicated with the coaches and young people alike was an inspiration to our organisation and the individual coaches themselves. This credibility is priceless for us as the coaches we work with do so completely voluntarily and we are always looking for ways to further their development as leaders in their respective communities. As a direct result of this course, the coaches that attended have now committed to investing more of their time to work alongside Coaching for Hope more closely in the future.”

Sir Trevor Brooking visits coaching masterclass
On Thursday 17th June, Rt Hon Jeremy Hunt MP (Secretary of State for Culture, Olympics, Media and Sport), Nicola Brewer (British High Commissioner in South Africa) and Julian Eccles (FA Director of Communications and Marketing) joined Sir Trevor Brooking (The FA's Director of Football Development) on a visit to our advanced coaching course in Cape Town.

The visitors observed the coaches teaching life skills to young players and after the session they had the opportunity to talk to the children about the programme.
The Secretary of State for Sport, Media and Culture, Jeremy Hunt said: "I've seen how powerful community football programmes are in the UK so it's fascinating to see how they're being used to combat HIV/AIDS in South Africa. My only disappointment was getting here too late to see Beckham visiting this programme last year."

Youth Football Festival in Lesotho
On Friday 2nd July, Skillshare International held the first ever Coaching for Hope tournament in Lesotho. More than 200 young people participated in this youth football festival tournament, which was hosted to celebrate the World Cup being in South Africa and to launch Coaching for Hope’s activities in Lesotho. These activities are part of the "Breaking the cycle of vulnerability" projects funded by the Big Lottery Fund. Skillshare International is working with national and regional networks of people living with HIV and AIDS, including the Lesotho Network for People Living with HIV/ AIDS (LENEPWHA) to implement these projects.
There were eight female teams and 21 male teams involved in the five-a-side tournament and each team represented one of the competing nations in the 2010 World Cup. All of the teams in the tournament trained with coaches who completed a workshop with Coaching for Hope in April.

Procession through town
|
Girls game (Brazil vs. England)
|
The day began with a procession through Mafeteng involving coaches, players and spectators carrying their team flags and blowing vuvuzelas. In the end, the Netherlands took home the trophy for the boys and Ivory Coast was the victorious girls’ team.
In addition to the football matches, LENEPWHA was able to engage with a number of spectators and distribute information on HIV/AIDS prevention, treatment and care. People attending the event were also encouraged to go for voluntary counselling and HIV testing at the specially constructed tents run by Population Services International (PSI). 33 people were tested (19 female and 14 male) with six testing positive (five female and one male). In order to encourage others to discover their status, Jane Carter (Coaching for Hope Director) and Mike Richardson (UK and West Africa Programme Manager) went for voluntary counselling and testing. Jane said: "This was a humbling experience and I was very impressed by the sensitive and thorough approach taken by the counsellor. With nearly 25% of people in Lesotho HIV positive, finding out your status is only part of the solution but it is an important step towards encouraging openness and safer lifestyles."

Coaching for Hope patron Norman Cook joined us to visit our partner Ambitious Youth of Khayelitsha on Saturday 19th June, the day after his sell-out gig. At a press conference before his gig, Norman said “One of the reasons I am here is to promote the work of Coaching for Hope, the charity I am patron of.”
Norman and his tour manager were impressed by the spirit and determination of the young people we met who are using sport to create opportunities which take them off the streets and help them gain new life skills.

Promoting women's football in South Africa
|
Lucy Mills coordinating the tournament |
On 25th June 2010, Skillshare International development worker Lucy Mills co-ordinated a five-a-side tournament for women and girls in Cape Town. 12 teams from the Western Cape took part in the event on Grand Central Parade, which formed part of the FIFA Fan Fest.
Local coach, Anthony Bailey from Sparkling Stars, said: "This was one of the best organised tournaments in Cape Town. Our girls enjoyed it and want more tournaments like this in the future."
|
Lucy is on a two-year placement in South Africa with Coaching for Hope, supporting our local partner organisation SCORE to deliver a football and life skills programme. Lucy, who worked with colleagues at Coaching for Hope and SCORE to organise the tournament, said: "I'm part of a research collective on gender and sport and last year we did extensive research into the extent to which women will benefit from the 2010 World Cup. Our findings were incredibly bleak and reinforced the challenges we face when promoting women's football. With so many football fans in Cape Town during the World Cup it was a great time to raise awareness and take some big steps forward to address gender inequity."

On Thursday 1st July adidas held their third annual five-a-side football tournament in Bury, Manchester. The tournament was World Cup themed and the Coaching for Hope team, made up of volunteers from Leicester and Manchester, played as Cameroon. We were up against Denmark (lost 4-0), USA (lost 3-2), Argentina (lost 3-1) and Australia, (won 2-0). Zelda Yanovich (CFH Programme Funding Officer) says: "Thank you to all those that took part in the team and supported us. We got better and tighter as the tournament wore on, and had we not got knocked out at the group stage we clearly would have won!"

Breakfast reception at the FA
On 20th July at Teacher Stern law firm in London, Coaching for Hope hosted a reception for 40 people who came to hear Andy Anson, Chief Executive of England's 2018 bid team, talk about FIFA's Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) agenda and what England was doing to fulfil it.
A number of corporate supporters and potential new supporters attended to hear Andy explain how the FA aimed to 'exceed FIFA's expectations at every level' and how the launch of the Football United Fund for overseas development would be launched in January if England win the bid. This is aimed at developing grass-roots football based projects in Africa which aim to empower young people. Guests were invited to enter a team for CFH's 'Footie for Good' tournament or sign up for a Study Tour to Burkina Faso next January and see our work at first hand.
