Nothemba supports Beckham to launch 2018 bid

On 14th May 2010, 16-year old Nothemba Bambiso from Cape Town appeared on stage in Zurich with David Beckham as he presented the England 2018 World Cup Bid Book to FIFA.

Nothemba is one of Coaching for Hope's young leaders, trained through our partnership with Amandla Ku Lutsha, with support from adidas. She has impressed many people with her positive approach and is a fantastic role model for other young people in South Africa, including the country's two million orphans. Nothemba captains the football team at Marsh Memorial Children's Home in Cape Town, where she lives, and also coaches some of the home's younger children.

She says: “Football has played a huge part in my life and it has helped bring enjoyment and confidence to so many of my friends. This trip to Europe is a really exciting opportunity for me as I am going to be meeting so many interesting people in the game, I want to learn as much as I can while I am here and then go home to share the experience with my friends and team-mates from Coaching for Hope.”

In David Beckham’s 2018 bid letter of support he referred to his Coaching for Hope visit in December 2009: "I met Nothemba last December at the Coaching for Hope project at Khayelitsha, near Cape Town. It is amazing to visit a project like this and see the effect football has on young people. Football has the power to change lives and these youngsters are able to learn valuable lessons through their love of the game."

Bernard Mendy takes part in anti-substance abuse event

In April 2010 Hull City’s Bernard Mendy supported our anti-substance abuse day at Hull's KC Stadium, which we ran in partnership with the Tigers Trust. The day was an opportunity to bring the anti-substance abuse messages that we share in Africa to the local community in Hull. Mendy took part in the afternoon session and spoke positively about our work - “In football, we know that drugs cannot be good, so it’s great to know that there are some fantastic people at Hull City spreading that message to local teenagers.”

Wembley Auction raises more than £12,000

On 3rd February 2010, The FA hosted a charity auction at its Wembley headquarters to raise money for our work. Guests with the highest bids went away with fantastic auction items including an England shirt signed by David Beckham, Jensen Button’s 2005 Formula One racesuit, and a signed photo montage of Freddie Flintoff celebrating the 2005 Ashes victory.

TV presenter Jonny Ball was a brilliant auctioneer, attending the event with son-in-law Norman Cook (our patron) who donated a VIP trip to the ‘Rock Ness’ festival in Scotland, which he will be headlining.

The total raised by the end of the night was over £12,000. Coaching for Hope Director Jane Carter said, "This event has given us a fantastic platform to showcase our work in the run-up to the 2010 World Cup in front of a high profile football and corporate audience. The interest that it has generated has been really encouraging and will enable us to ensure that there is a sustainable legacy after the tournament is over."

Costello raises £1,600 to support our work

On 4th December 2009, Costello FC held a social evening at Manor Club on Willerby Road, Hull to celebrate a successful second annual tournament and thank the volunteers who helped make it happen. 85 teams took part in the football tournament over a weekend, raising money to support Costello’s community football programme and to support Coaching for Hope. Andy Winfield of Costello presented a cheque for £1600 to us on the night which will enable us to provide education about substance abuse and HIV in Southern Africa.

Working with UCLan

Clint Godfrey, Senior Lecturer within the School of Sport, Tourism and the Outdoors is visiting South Africa with Coaching for Hope.  He has been supporting us to develop a monitoring and evaluation toolkit and deliver professional development workshops for the local coaches in Cape Town since the partnership between Coaching for Hope and UCLan began in 2008.

The toolkit will enable key stakeholders to recognise what is working.  It's really important to asses whether the collective efforts are making a real difference to the communities we're supporting.  If delivery is not as effective as it could be then the monitoring allows the partners to make changes and maximise the impact of our programmes.

Clint will conduct specific research into the effectiveness of monitoring and evaluation whilst on his visit to our programme in December 2009.

Hull City donates £2,500 for South Africa course

Hull City AFC contributed to the cost of a Coaching for Hope course in South Africa in June 2009. The donation meant that Matt Barr from the club's Community Scheme could travel to Cape Town to deliver football coach education to 20 of the local coaches we work with in communities all over the Western Cape. This education goes further than just football coaching - Coaching for Hope is all about providing social messages through football. The focus of our courses is on developing local coaches' communication skills so that they can deliver football 'crossover sessions' to a really high standard. This method uses sport to engage young people in learning about social issues such as sexual health and life skills. Hull City have provided coaches to deliver our curriculum since 2005, and this latest gesture from the club highlights the commitment shown by both parties.

BHAFC coaches join us in Cape Town
Barry Cooper coaching in South Africa

In June 2009, Stuart Christie from Brighton and Hove Albion FC travelled to South Africa to coach on a Coaching for Hope course in Cape Town. Stuart is one of the club's most experienced football development officers with vast experience in the delivery of social inclusion projects. We have been working in partnership with BHAFC since we started out in 2005. The club has been involved in both curriculum development and providing coaches, including Barry Cooper (photo), to deliver courses in West and Southern Africa. Our UK Programme Manager Mike Richardson said "We have always enjoyed outstanding working relationships with the BHAFC team. Without doubt they have one of the most effective community schemes in the country."
