Bib and cone collection supports HIV education

When Tracey Kevins and Laura Harvey returned to the UK from Mali, where they had worked with us to deliver a women's coaching courses in some of the most remote parts of the country, they wanted to continue to support our work. During their time in Mali in 2009 they saw first-hand our need for football equipment and additional resources to help our local coaches deliver the potentially life-saving HIV education. When they got back to the UK they organised a bib and cone collection at all the football clubs near them and collected more than 200 cones and 100 bibs of different colours and sizes.

We really appreciate this huge effort and once again would like to pay tribute to the dedication and quality of staff at The FA.

Costello Tournament

Continuing on from last year when they raised £1,600 to support our work, Sunday League football club Costello Tigers held a fundraiser event for Coaching for Hope in July 2009. The young players participated in a tournament at Wold Primary School in Hull on Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th July. The money raised has now been split between the club and the charity. Andy Winfield, who runs one of the teams at Costello, organised the tournament for U7 to U15 teams. Coaching for Hope UK Programme Manager Mike Richardson said "The tournament was first class and everyone involved in organising the day did an outstanding job." There was fun for all the family with a bouncy castle and raffles - including top prizes such as signed Hull City, Hull FC, Hull KR and England shirts and footballs. Thanks to Andy and the team for all the support and hard work!

“Get on the Coach Train ” launched at Coutts Bank

On 8th December 2008 we launched our World Cup campaign “Get on the Coach Train” at Coutts Bank’s main branch in the Strand.

Coutts hosted 35 of our guests to a three-course lunch, and Lord Triesman, the first independent Chair of The FA, was our guest speaker. Sir Trevor Brooking also attended and it was certainly a sign of The FA’s interest in our work that several of their Board members came too.

Before lunch guests watched our World Cup campaign film which features Zoe Ball, and they all went home with an ethically traded Coaching for Hope football. We are now conducting follow up calls and meetings and already we have had pledges of support from Coutts themselves, Nationwide Building Society and Deloittes. If we are to roll out our Coach Train initiative across eight African countries in the run-up to the World Cup, we will need as many sponsors and donors as we can find and this event provided us with an excellent launchpad to promote this campaign.

Walk to the game

Chris and Jamie Porrett from Telford in Shropshire raised almost £2,000 for Coaching for Hope in October 2008.

Over three days, they walked 80 miles from Telford to Anfield for the match between Liverpool and Wigan on Saturday 18th October. Setting out from home, the main part of their journey followed the Shropshire Union Canal from the Millennium Way path near Norbury Junction up to Ellesmere Port, along the South of the Mersey before catching the ferry across, then up to Anfield.
